While waiting for the arrival of Work Permit (otherwise known as Employment Authorization Document), I was hoping to get some photographic opportunities. Something I had been planning on shooting (the imaginary shot residing in my head) was downtown Houghton with snowflakes. Unfortunately, for a long time I did not know the appropriate exposure value to get that picture. Recently, while shooting US Cross Country Skiing Championship, I found the settings. I tried the downtown Houghton in snow flakes once before but framing did not turn out as expected :( Fortunately enough - I knew the settings, the snow flakes were there as well (and they continued to be there while I went back to my apartment and grabbed the equipment) and this is the result. Reminds me of a popular poem by Sammy Cahn & Jule Styne:
Only irony is that I am leaving this town soon and the sign says Welcome To Houghton!!
Oh, the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
And since we've no place to go,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
It doesn't show signs of stopping,
And I brought some corn for popping;
The lights are turned way down low,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
When we finally say good night,
How I'll hate going out in the storm;
But if you really hold me tight,
All the way home I'll be warm.
The fire is slowly dying,
And, my dear, we're still good-bye-ing,
But as long as you love me so.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
Only irony is that I am leaving this town soon and the sign says Welcome To Houghton!!

It wasn't the perfect setting (I would have preferred lighter flurries) but with varying weather conditions, this is probably as close to being perfect as I would have ever gotten to shoot - especially with so little time left...

I kinda feel for you and in all honesty, I am longing for some snow where I live now. I shot this about 10 days before I left Houghton (a place which I will forever refer to as 'the Paradise'). You probably see the irony in the picture: the sign says 'Welcome To Houghton' and I was leaving the area, not knowing when/if I will ever get back...

Nice composition on this shot! I haven't been up there in the snow, but every time this troll goes there it rains. I have yet to see the UP in sunshine.

Hey G,2008-12-22 16:57:59
It will be neat to see if you get to do a followup shot to this now that all of the skywalks are out of downtown. You can see clear through town to the loop!

Last time I was in town, I did read something about it (sky-walks being taken down) in newspaper. Have little idea why they would do something like that but I wouldn't rule out $$ (or lack thereof).
